Thinking of the best seller genre in books something comes to mind- Non fiction. Non-fictional stories or basically real life stories are winning hearts of people globally. When contemplating one of the most influential Indian authors often associated with the genre of non-fiction a name crosses the mind- Sudha Murty. A successful author in English, Kannada and Marathi, she has written many books over the years, teaching others life lessons through her own experiences.
Sudha Murty was born in Shiggaon in North Karnataka in 1950 to Dr. R H Kulkarni and Vimala Kulkarni, she always had a vision of pursuing what she wanted and she did it, completing her engineering in times where engineering was considered as male dominated field. She also believes in doing work for the society which she considers uplifting for her, this makes her an amazing philanthropist.
Recently one of her best selling books that got published was “HERE THERE AND EVERYWHERE, best loved stories of Sudha Murty”. The best thing about the book is it’s elegant yet simple language. A highly recommended book for teens and adults, teaching life lessons sharing her personal experiences like- the difficulties she faced in engineering college being the only girl in the college she recalls ink being spilled on her seat, mean comments passed to her but the determination she had made her stand against all odds , the down to earth author also writes about the lessons she learnt from a beggar, she has also written about touchy topics like the “line of separation”, she has also written about saving the future of a young girl in her journey from Bombay to Bangalore. She also has written about her childhood, her days with her grandparents where she writes about how she acquired the quality of giving; through her grandparents, she also doesn’t shy away from acknowledging how her own daughter made her think of her duty. She also writes about the story of Rehman’s Avva, and teaches a lesson about how religion doesn’t matter when you have faith in humanity.
There is also a chapter on honesty which talks about a small village boy who may be poor with money but is rich with good qualities. She also has written about the true meaning of success and how laziness can kill a person from inside. There’s also a chapter on the true meaning of philanthropy in which she says that the only thing one really needs to be a philanthropist is the attitude and determination to assist others. She also said that it is compassion, a kind word, a warm hug and a little sharing that can make us better human beings.
All in all it is a complete book filled with life lessons worth a million dollars.
